Diabetic Eye Exams
Diabetes is a complex disease that affects various parts of your body, including your eyes. At Vision North, we offer diabetic eye exams for patients with diabetes, including those with diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic Retinopathy can develop when sugar in the blood compromises the integrity of blood vessels in the eye and disrupts the natural flow of oxygen. Diabetic retinopathy often does not induce any visual symptoms, until it has advanced to a severe state.
To monitor for Diabetic Retinopathy, we use the following technologies:
Optos Fundus Photography
Our Optos camera provides high-resolution and wide-field images to study your eyes and monitor for changes over time; we will always compare your images to previous images to evaluate for change.
Diabetic retinopathy can impact people of all ages and in cases of diabetic eye diseases and further complications, early detection is key. Optos Fundus Photography allows us to monitor for early signs.
The test usually takes less than two minutes and involves a bright camera flash.
Optical Coherence Tomography
The OCT test provides images of your eyes that are taken from a cross-section. The doctors use this to monitor for signs of swelling in the retina that can often manifest with Diabetic Retinopathy.
The test usually takes less than 10 minutes and involves no flashes; you’ll simply be asked to focus on a target while the images are taken.
