Glaucoma Care
Glaucoma is a complex group of conditions that have the potential to significantly impair a person's vision or cause blindness. Unfortunately, there are little to no symptoms in the early stages of Glaucoma and the condition progresses so slowly that symptoms typically don’t manifest until the severe or advanced stages. Early detection is key to limiting the risk of serious visual consequences. A comprehensive eye examination is the only way to detect the early signs of Glaucoma.
There are several risk factors for Glaucoma and they include (but are not limited to): a family history of glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure (IOP), advanced age, and enlarged optic nerves. The doctors at Vision North are trained and experienced when it comes to identifying these risk factors.
There are two main sources of information/tests that are used to diagnose, evaluate and manage Glaucoma:
Visual Field Testing (a.k.a. Automated Perimetry)
Vision North is equipped with a Humphrey Visual Field analyzer. Testing with this device is designed to detect and monitor any abnormalities in your visual field. We use this technology to monitor for visual field loss and patterns that are typical of Glaucoma.
OCT Testing (a.k.a. Optical coherence tomography)
Vision North is equipped with an OptoVue OCT. This device is used to analyze parts of the eye that change as Glaucoma progresses; the two main areas we monitor with the OCT are the Optic Nerve and the Macula. If Glaucoma is progressing, the neural tissues at the Optic Nerve and the Macula will be thinning.
There is no cure for Glaucoma, but there are ways to manage the risk of progression. Unfortunately, there are no current treatment options that can offer recovery of vision that has been lost. Managing Glaucoma is done by lowering a person’s intraocular pressure (IOP). That is accomplished using eye drops, laser, and or surgery.
If you are diagnosed with Glaucoma, our doctors at Vision North will take special care to review your condition, your test results, and your treatment options.
